The word Talaqi after which the gate is named means Divorce. The word as such is also used in the meaning of ‘condemned’. It is said that this name stands in memory of the mishap to Sabir Suri, who according to a common story, entered the gate and had an attack of fever. Thus regarding it as a bad omen the gate came to be known as Talaqi Gate.
