Visit Rohtas Fort

A new project engages locals to ensure conservation and preservation of Rohtas Fort

Rohtas Fort was built in the 16th Century at a strategic site in the Punjab. It is an exceptional example of early Muslim military architecture in the Central and South Asia. The main fortifications of this 70-hectare garrison consist of massive masonry walls, more than four kilometres in circumference, lined with 68 bastions and 12 gateways at strategic points. The building and defence of the fort had great influence on the development of architectural style in the Mughal Empire.

Rohtas: The king of forts

The rising sun was reflecting in the car side mirror. I was parked at Babu Sabu exit of the motorway outside Lahore and waiting for Asif who had not taken my punctuality seriously. When he finally arrived, still more asleep than awake, we were already an hour behind schedule.

Qila Rohtas – legacy of the subcontinent’s ‘Lion King’

Qila Rohtas, which lies near the city of Jhelum, was built on the orders of Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. Among the list of legacies left behind by Sher Shah Suri – the ‘Lion King’ of the subcontinent – is the Qila Rohtas, which lies upon a low rocky hill on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road near the city of Jhelum in Punjab.

Khwas Khan of Rohtas

A dozen kilometres north of Lala Musa, near the well & sarai of Khwaspur, Khwas Khan was buried by his followers. Just inside the Khwas Khani or north gate of Rohtas, as one enters, there is a rather smallish grave with a green-domed roof. The sign on the wall says, ‘Hazrat Syed Sakhi Khwas Khan Shah’. Legend has it, this holy man, known never to have refused whatever was demanded of him (hence ‘sakhi’), struggled against the Sikhs. When finally overcome, he got into some silly wager with his antagonists. “Ask and you shall have your demand”, he is said to have challenged

A journey through the soul of Potohar

I lower the car window and stick my head out to feel the pulsating wind. It reeks of ancient legends and genius.

The narrow winding road through hillocks is less travelled and I have not seen any vehicle for some time. Adil, my driver with whom I had already shared an adventure, while we were finding our way to Pharwala Fort, is getting a little apprehensive.
